When feeding your pet a raw diet, it’s important to recognize that there are many different kinds of raw foods. While some kibbles, canned food and treats incorporate raw foods, today we’re going to discuss the 4 major types of raw pet foods: raw meaty bones, organ meat, freeze-dried and dehydrated pet foods and grinds.

Raw Meaty Bones
When we talk about raw meaty bones, we’re talking about chicken necks, turkey necks, chicken backs and similar foods. Raw meaty bones are packed with vitamins and minerals. They should make up 30 to 50 percent of a pet’s total diet, or possibly a little more if the parts you feed have a great deal more meat than bone (e.g., whole chickens or rabbits).
Organ Meat
Organ meats like heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys have been used in pet foods for years, but they have gained more recent recognition as rich sources of nutrients, possibly because of their inclusion in raw food diets. They are technically considered by-products, but they are good by-products and should be viewed as excellent sources of protein.
Freeze Dried and Dehydrated Foods
Freeze-dried and dehydrated pet foods maintain the nutritional properties of raw food with the convenience of feeding a pre-packaged manufactured pet food. Freeze drying and dehydrating keep the foods rich in vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants and amino acids that any living thing needs in order to remain strong, healthy and resilient to disease. The end product contains the raw foods’ natural color, flavor, and aroma, which shows that it still contains life.
Grinds
