Poop. Let’s discuss this. While poop is not the most polite thing to talk about regarding your pets, because it’s International Pooper Scooper Week, it’s totally appropriate! 

Did you know our pets produce over 4.4 billion pounds of waste annually? That’s enough to cover 900 football fields with 12 inches of waste!

Picking Up Poo, The Right Thing To Do!

In 2002, the Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists created International Pooper Scooper Week to educate pet owners on the importance of cleaning up after their pets. How many walks have you been on with your dog or cat and noticed poop in yards or parks? Most likely more than you would like to see! Here are some reasons why it’s important and courteous to pick up your pet’s poop:

• Stormwater carries pet waste and other pollutants directly into waterways. 
• Animal waste can contain bacteria and other organisms that can be transmitted to humans.
• In many suburban and urban areas, picking up after your pet is the law. If there is no law in your area, it is still the polite thing to do!

No one likes to step in pet waste and spread it into homes, businesses, or cars. So be sure to carry a bag on your walks or outings. Cleaning your front and back yards is also very important as that is where most poop can pile up and be tracked into your homes. 

Our kitty friends also need to have clean litter boxes! Litter boxes should be scooped daily to keep your kitty happy. Generally, cat owners should have 1 litter box per cat plus one (i.e. if you have 2 cats you should have 3 litter boxes). As long as the litter boxes are scooped daily, cat owners can have the litter last 3-4 weeks before refilling the box.
