Sojos is originally a Michigan-based company, started in 1985 by two women mixing up a batch of pet food in their own kitchen. With a nod to the teachings of the "grandmother of herbal medicine" Juliette de Bairacli Levy, this became the basis for their first product, Sojos Original.

In 1996, the manager of a holistic veterinary practice in Minnesota was so impressed by the positive results he saw with dogs that were fed Sojos, he bought the company that was now up for sale.
