Echinacea, also classified as Echinacea purpurea, is a fantastic immunity-building herb for many species. The root, flower, and stems can all be used for healing purposes. However, echinacea root is the most powerful part of the plant.
It is best to harvest the root in the fall, after the plant has matured to three years old. At this stage, you can be sure the plant has its most powerful healing components.
Benefits of Echinacea for Pets
Echinacea is a good antimicrobial herb and can be even more effective when used alongside other herbs like goldenseal, cleavers, couch grass, or oregon grape. Echinacea is the go-to herb for ridding the body of microbial infections. It can be particularly helpful with upper respiratory infections as well as nose and sinus troubles.
Echinacea can be used for both internal and external ailments. Native Americans used the plant externally to heal burns, septic sores, and cuts. Internally, Echinacea is good for rheumatism, sluggish lymphatic system, streptococcus infections, laryngitis, catarrhal conditions, pyorrhea, gingivitis, and cystitis.
How to Prepare Echinacea
You can make a tea infusion from Echinacea root and feed it to your pet for an immune booster. It works best when you are supporting an already healthy immune system. Using Echinacea in this way can also help pets who are dealing with nutritional changes and/or stress.
